Jenna Bush Hager in an honest discussion about a trying time in her friendship with Hoda Kotb shares about some of the turbulent times.

During a discussion on being "brutally honest" with Hoda and Jenna on Wednesday's episode of TODAY, Bush Hager, 41, broke down in tears as she recalled a time she was open with Kotb, 58, after feeling like she didn't know how to be a helpful friend.

"When Hoda's daughter wasn't feeling well, I just wasn't there for her the way I wanted to be. And I didn't know how to be, and I felt terrible about it," Bush Hager shared, beginning to get emotional.

"But I didn't know what to do. So I just said it. I said 'I feel like I haven't been there for you,' " she recalled.

Hope, Kotb's 3-year-old daughter, was admitted to the hospital in February, and Kotb continued by saying that her co-host's candour meant "everything" to her.

"It was, first of all, one of the most beautiful statements," said Kotb, "and it touched me deeply and it meant everything to me that you said that."

Kotb, who is also the mother of Haley Joy, 6, took a few weeks off from Today in February to be with Hope when she was recovering in the hospital.

Even though she hasn't revealed any more details regarding her daughter's condition, she did admit that the experience was "really scary" on a recent episode of Today with Hoda and Jenna.

"She's vibrant and brilliant," the mother of two said of Hope, adding that she's "over the moon" to have her little one home.
