John Wick 4 quickly raced to the top as the weekend's most popular film

John Wick: Chapter 4 has taken the box office by storm in its opening weekend as it garnered an impressive $73.5 million in ticket sales in the North American market.

According to industry watcher Exhibitor Relations, analyst David A. Gross said that the neo-noir Lionsgate production had a "superb opening" adding that each sequel of the John Wick films managed to surpass its former installments.

With its massively positive reviews during the initial screenings it came to no surprise that John Wick 4 managed to sweep the box office.

It is expected that the movie will continue its upward trajectory in the coming week and even enter the profit zone towards the second weekend.

"Would that all action films were so well and cleanly choreographed," the Washington Post raved.

This is a stark contrast to last weekend's box office leader Shazam! Fury of the Gods which although was the lead, turned  out to be a massive box office bomb having raked in $9.7 million.

The movie that Variety calls "one of the worst turnouts for a modern superhero movie" stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel and Adam Brody.

On to the third spot, Scream VI collected $8.4 million during the weekend. The horror movie stars Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega and Skeet Ulrich.

On fourth place was another sequel, Creed III, which earned $8.37 million. Starring and directed by Michael B. Jordan it also includes cast members Jonathan Majors, who was arrested for assaulting a woman.

Furthermore on fifth is sci-fi thriller 65 starring Adam Driver.

The rest in the top 10 were:

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($2.4 million)

Cocaine Bear ($2.1 million)

Jesus Revolution ($2 million)

Champions ($1.5 million)

Avatar: The Way of Water ($1.4 million)
