Why did Keanu Reeves exit The Devil in the White City series adaptation?

Hulu has given up on the series adaptation of The Devil in the White City after Keanu Reeves exited it during pre-production last year.

The update was reported by Variety, which revealed that the OTT platform has decided not to move ahead with the project based on Erik Larson's bestselling novel of the same name.

The official logline of the show would have told "the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America's first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious 'Murder Castle' built in the Fair's shadow."

The reason behind the Matrix star’s exit from the show is unclear, however, along with the actor, its former director Todd Field also left the project.

Leonardo DiCaprio had the rights to the adaptation and would’ve served as the executive producer of the series alongside Martin Scorsese, Rick Yorn, Stacey Sher, Sam Shaw, and Mark Lafferty.

Sam Shaw was set to serve as the showrunner and the script was penned by Billy Ray.
