International Women's Day 2023 rallies for more rights

As International Women's Day is here you need to take a look at what the global event stands for, the theme and issues human activists are focusing on.

On Tuesday, Spain released a bill aimed to boost the share of women in business and politics, including a proposed requirement that women hold 40 percent of the seats in large companies as board of directors.

On this day, achievements of women are celebrated and people stand up for the basic women rights.

The first celebrations took place in the year 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Over a million people rallied for women rights and better working conditions.

Since then the event has grown in size as focus is now on issues from violence against women to parity in the workplace.

What is this year's International Women's Day theme?

The theme this year is DigitAll: Innovation and technology for gender equality highlighting how technology is crucial to advancing rights but an increasing digital gender gap is affecting everything from women's job opportunities to their safety.

"Bringing women into technology results in more creative solutions and has greater potential for innovations that meet women’s needs and promote gender equality," read the U.N website.

Previous themes include climate change, rural women and HIV/AIDS.

As per the U.N 259 million fewer women have access to the internet than men.
