Doja Cat, who is known for her songs Hot Pink and Say So, is also a fine classical dancer and here's how.
The American rapper and singer, Doja, learnt Bharatnatyam when she was living in a retreat called Ashram, which is based in California, during her childhood days.
She practiced Hinduism in an ashram run by American jazz artist named, Alice Coltrane.
To note, she spent five years in New York City before moving to California, and there she took the dance lessons.
Owing to the restrictive Hindu norms, Doja did not continue the practice of singing bhajans at temples under the swami ship of Alice Coltrane so she then moved away from there and joined breakdancing classes.
While in high school, she became part of a professional pop-locking troupe and delivered several dance performances all around LA. Later she took hold of singing lessons and that actually helped her get in to a performing arts highs school.
About the dance Bharatnatyan, Doja once said it is a highly emotive classical dance form focused more on forming shapes and angles with your body.
Bharatnatyam is a Tamil-Nadu based Indian classical dance style and Doja very well is trained in that.
Eight Indian classical genres are known worldwide and Bharatnatyam is one of them.
It reflects South Indian religious themes as well as spiritual ideas, Hinduism and Shaivism.
