Elijah Wood has opened up about his time starring in The Lord of the Rings — and surprisingly, the money wasn’t what fans might expect from one of the most iconic roles in movie history.

Speaking to Business Insider at the 2025 Texas Film Awards, the actor, now 44, said that playing Frodo in Peter Jackson’s billion-dollar trilogy didn’t make him instantly rich.

“It wasn’t the sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life,” Wood admitted, citing the unusual nature of filming all three movies at once — a high-stakes gamble by director Jackson.

Because there was no break between films for the cast to renegotiate contracts, even as the movies dominated the box office, Wood and his co-stars missed out on massive pay bumps.

Despite the trilogy grossing nearly $2.9 billion worldwide, the cast’s salaries were relatively modest. Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee) once revealed he earned around $250,000, while Orlando Bloom (Legolas) said he was paid just $175,000 across all three films.

“I got nothing, nothing, nothing,” Bloom joked during a 2019 interview with Howard Stern. “But it was the greatest gift of my life.”

When asked if his own pay was in the same ballpark, Wood declined to confirm numbers but said simply: “It doesn’t matter.”

“It’s such an honour to have been a part of those films,” he added. “They represent some of the best experiences of my life.”
